Twill Block Placemats  These placemats are made of a heavy cotton and threaded in a twill block pattern. I was using up some yarn I bought from another weaver. I don't even know what it is -- maybe you do! It is definitely cotton, definitely unmercerized, and 8-ply. Maybe cable cotton? The sett was 8 ends per inch. The placemats actually started out to be towels until I wove the first one, cut it off the loom, wet finished it, and realized it was just too heavy for any kind of towel. I measured out the proper size for placemats, machine stitched along the two edges where I would be cutting, and cut the larger towel down to placemat size. Another beginner's experiment with a happy ending!
