Ken, Mary & The Farm

Fancy Fibers Farm is a family farm where Mary raises alpacas, goats, sheep, and rabbits for their beautiful fibers and Ken raises pastured, cage-free chickens for fun and fresh eggs.

We invite you to become a part of our farm by visiting or working with us and our animals, through our CSA, or by purchasing our products online, at craft festivals, or in our Farm Store.

Come try your hand at being a fiber farmer! We look forward to your company!

Welcome to the World’s Most Diverse Fiber CSA!

Let us “share” our Farm with you!

What is a CSA?
CSA is the acronym for Community Supported Agriculture. With food, it is unquestionable that each of us can do a good thing by shortening the distance between our food and our tables. The vegetable CSA helps to meet that need. People buy a “share” in the harvest of a local vegetable farm and, in turn, receive fresh vegetables! The vegetable CSA has been highly successful in meeting the needs of people who are simply not in a place to do much gardening, but who desire fresh, local, healthy (often organic) vegetables. The “shareholders” help the farmer sustain the family farm, enjoy the satisfaction of having done so, and eat wonderfully wholesome veggies! The added bonus is that they know exactly where their food comes from.

Do you know where your yarn comes from?
The yarn and fiber CSA works basically on the same model. Pioneered in 2008 by Susie Gibbs (Juniper Moon Farm), and in Texas by Cindy Telisak (Jacob’s Reward Farm), the yarn and fiber CSA offers a similar opportunity to people who love to work with fiber! Knitters, spinners, felters, dyers, crocheters — if you are someone who loves one or more of the fiber crafts, you now have the opportunity to help the fiber farmer sustain the family farm and share in the harvest of wooly and wonderful fibers.

So how does this work?
At the Fancy Fibers Farm we focus on raising Suri alpacas, Shetland sheep, Angora goats, and Angora rabbits. We also own 2 Border Leceister sheep and, although they are not a breed we intend to focus on, we are excited about having their fiber. Finally, to round out our fiber offering and to provide suitable blending fibers, we occasionally purchase fleeces from other farms that meet our high standards both for animal care and for fiber quality.

When you purchase a share of our 2010 fiber harvest, you will not only receive a selection of fiber, you will also be invited to participate in the life of the farm. You can come out for Farm Workdays during the year (actually working is optional, of course!), and attend special events held here at the farm.

Additionally, each shareholder will receive a shareholder certificate, one dozen farm fresh eggs (based on availability), and a pair of warm wool-blend socks, sized to fit your foot and cranked out on one of our antique circular sock machines! You even get to choose your yarn!

Okay, how do I sign up?

We are excited that you have decided to become a part of our farm life! Now you have some choices to make!

Are you a spinner? Then you may want a Spinner’s Share at a cost of $150 per share. A Spinner’s Share will be made up of roving that includes our fibers and fiber blends.

If you don’t spin, but you knit or crochet, then you may want a Yarn Lover’s Share, also $150 per share. The Yarn Lover’s Share will be made up of yarn that has been spun from our fibers and fiber blends. [Please note that because of the additional expense of spinning, a Yarn Lover's Share will be less in total weight than a Spinner's Share.]

Maybe you don’t spin, or knit, or crochet, or have any other type of fiber fun, but you would still like to have some farm fun every now and then without buying one for yourself! For you, we offer the opportunity to become a Friend of the Farm at a cost of $50 per share. Your share will not include any fiber, but you will still receive all the other benefits and have all the other opportunities that are offered to our roving and yarn shareholders!

That’s it in a nutshell! If you have any questions, please send me an email or give me a call. If you’re ready to have some farm fun, make your selection from the choices below!

We have great plans for 2010. There is still time to join us!
